The Health and Wellness Centre offers a culturally focused and coordinated continuum of care to those
living with addiction and those living high risk lifestyles. The Muskeg Lake Cree Nation miyomacihowin
Health Center supports and advances broad-based harm reduction strategies that are culturally relevant in a variety of treatment and care options.

Reporting to the Director of Health & Wellness, this position provides addiction outreach, prevention,
intervention and follow-up services and supports positive mental wellness to improve the quality of life,
in a culturally responsive and professional way. This position requires culturally appropriate and trauma-
informed care for the member of MLCN. The Community Addictions Outreach Worker will have
knowledge to ensure that extensive collaboration and networking with other community-based
organizations and health and social systems happen.

• Possess an effective understanding of Indigenous culture, spirituality and community life on the
First Nation;
• Establish and maintain contacts with community knowledge & language keepers to assist with
the implementation of services and supports in the community;
• Maintain a lifestyle that ensures the role is providing support and services to community members
in a healthy manner;
• Refer clients to other social programs or assist clients in locating and utilizing community
resources including legal, medical, and financial assistance, housing, employment, transportation,
day care and other services;
• Counsel clients living in the community of Muskeg Lake Cree Nation, supervise their activities and
assist in pretreatment and post treatment planning;
• Implement life skills workshops, substance abuse treatment programs, behavior management
programs, youth services programs and other community and social service programs under the
supervision of social or health care professionals;
• Assist in evaluating the effectiveness of treatment programs by tracking clients’ behavioral
changes and responses to interventions;
• Provide crisis intervention and emergency services;
• Maintain contact with other social programs, Kotawan and Health care providers involved with
clients to provide information and obtain feedback on clients’ overall progress.

• Participate in program development and new harm reduction strategies;
• Participate in health education, awareness projects and activities;
• Participate in project evaluation;
• Exposure to clients who may have impaired judgment due to emotional distress, mental illness
or intoxication;
• Must be willing to work flexible hours as assigned by management, which may include some
evenings and weekends;
• Performs other duties as required within the scope of practice.

• Certifications in Addictions Assessment, Mental Health and Addictions, including Gambling & other
addictions, and current registration with a governing body;
• Must have strong interpersonal skills, good judgment, ability to communicate effectively;
• Strong understanding of indigenous cultures; Knowledge of an indigenous language would be an
• Must possess a valid Class 5 Saskatchewan driver’s license, a reliable vehicle and meet MLCN’s
insurance requirements;
• Valid Standard First Aid/CPR certificate;
• Must provide a current, original, Canadian Criminal Record Check (CPIC) and Vulnerable Sector
check as a condition of employment;
• Knowledge of Accreditation Canada standards would be an asset;
• Fit for duty (as per policy).
