Job Summary

The Waste Transfer Station Assistant, under the direction of Director Public Works is responsible for the safe sorting and disposal of waste. This individual will be required to lift heavy loads repeatedly throughout the shift The incumbent must unload and sort waste while staying vigilant about the safety hazards that may be present.

Job Duties

  • Load and unload materials from trucks using hoists or forklifts.
  • Clean contaminated areas or equipment for re-use, using detergents or cleaners filter pumps, steam cleaners etc.
  • Operate machines or equipment to remove, sort, package, or transport loads of waste materials
  • Sort waste materials into correct categories such as household trash, wood, cardboard, recyclables, construction materials, yard trimmings (grass leaves),electronics, and hazardous materials; ensure items are put into correct bins for proper disposal.
  • Load bins onto trucks for transport to appropriate burial or recyclable sites
  • .Maintain records of types of materials being disposed.
  • Maintain equipment used ensuring proper inspections are conducted and repairs are made
  • Comply with all applicable environmental legislation including safe operation, carriage of goods, hours of service, and occupational health and safety.
  • Other duties as assigned


  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 2 years of experience in waste management an asset.
  • Valid driver’s 1A license
  • Ability to lift 100lbs, be flexible, and have good balance

Working Conditions

  • Varying work schedules including early morning schedules.
  • Must work in all weather conditions.
  • Lifting or moving up to 100lbs required
