We would like to share an important update with our members.
Following the June 7th ratification vote, where 92.6% of Muskeg Lake Cree Nation members who voted in favour of the Treaty 6 Agricultural Benefits Settlement Agreement, and the completion of the mandatory 7-day appeal period with no appeals received, Chief and Council have now signed the agreement.
The signed offer will be sent to Ottawa in the coming week. Once Canada acknowledges and signs the agreement, the Nation will receive payment. It may take some time for the Minister to sign the agreement, but we will follow up with her office regularly and provide a further update once she signs. This marks a major milestone on our path to restoring and asserting our Treaty rights.
We will communicate next steps in the coming weeks, including how to update your information with the Nation and with the trustee, FNB Trust. This will help us prepare for the per capita distribution payment, which will begin after we receive payment from Canada.
As previously shared, the proposed amendments to the Treaty Land Entitlement (TLE) Agreement did not reach the required voter turnout threshold. While the vote was close — falling short by just 45 votes — we remain committed to continuing this conversation and will inform the Nation of next steps in the near future.
kinanâskomitin for your trust, your voice, and your continued guidance.
— Chief and Council
